What do New Democrats NZ stand for?

New Democrats stand for reforming our economic system so that it prioritizes the well-being of the people. We advocate for policies that promote a fair go for all New Zealanders.

New Zealand has abundant natural resources, hardworking and skilled people and a reputation for innovation. We should have well paid productive jobs, a well performing health system and an education system that is the envy of the world.

But increasingly the economy has become unbalanced as the cost of living rises and the superwealthy buy more and more assets thereby driving up prices and making housing ownership unaffordable for the next generation. The growing gap between the superwealthy and the rest of us is hollowing out the NZ economy and eroding social cohesion.

Our primary goal is to change the economic system so that it genuinely serves the people. We believe in creating a more equitable society where decisions are made to benefit the broader community, not just those who are connected to a powerful elite.

What is your stance on economic reform?

We advocate for significant economic reform to ensure our financial system is robust, fair, and resilient. This includes measures that curb excessive bank lending for houses so that we can bring house prices within reach and reorient the economy towards productive investment and public benefit.
