Reclaiming the kiwi dream

The gap between the super wealthy and the rest of us is rapidly getting wider. New Zealand used to pride itself on being a fair, egalitarian society where anyone who worked hard could make a success of their situation. That was part of the kiwi dream. Increasingly that is no longer the case. House prices are out of reach of most young families - unless they have parents who can afford to help out. Unemployment and job insecurity adds to the worry and anxiety of many workers. Most families struggle to survive on two incomes let alone one. Our wage levels are falling behind Australia and other countries we traditionally compare ourselves to.

New Democrats beliefs

The core beliefs of the Party:

  • The economic, political and social systems should be built on the foundations of loving care, truth, justice and honest endeavour.
  • What is physically possible and desirable for the good of humanity can always be financially possible.
  • Systems should be made for people, not people for systems; any that fail to serve people should be reformed or discarded.
  • The individual is more important than the state.  Communism, fascism, and political authoritarianism in any form should be opposed.
  • Individual, family, social and co-operative enterprise should be the basis of economic organisation.
  • We believe in subsidiarity i.e. that decisions should be made at the most appropriate level eg; individual, family, neighbourhood, community, city, region and nation.
  • Political decisions should always consider the common good of all people, including the poor and vulnerable.
  • We believe in being good stewards of the environment for the long-term benefit of this and future generations.
  • All people have inherent human dignity regardless of race, creed, class or sex.
  • We respect the Treaty of Waitangi as part of the nation’s founding documents.

Our purpose as a party

PURPOSES:

  1. To recover effective control of New Zealand’s economic affairs and strengthen national sovereignty.
  2. To foster a property-owning democracy, in which the ownership of assets is spread as widely as possible amongst individuals.
  3. To establish an economy where people will be able to use the country’s resources without mortgaging their own and their children’s future.
  4. To protect and enhance our world's life support systems – air, water and soil – and preserve the richness and beauty of natural, biological ecosystems.
  5. Within the limits of resources available, to encourage the introduction of all forms of labour-saving technology, thereby increasing output, the standard of living and the quality of life.
  6. To ensure that, in an age of automation, with technology taking over the work of more people, incomes will nevertheless be maintained so that we may all share the benefits.
  7. To restore and stabilise the purchasing power of money, thereby enhancing  and protecting the value of incomes and savings.
  8. To provide more educational, trade training, apprenticeships and community recreational facilities to help rebuild a skilled workforce and social cohesion. .
  9. To promote a stable community through protection of the family as a basic unit of society.
  10. To promote democratic Parliamentary representation, using a Single Transferable Vote method in which the Members of Parliament primarily have regard to the expressed wishes of the Electorate.

"The supreme quality for leadership is unquestionably integrity. Without it, no real success is possible, no matter whether it is on a section gang, a football field, in an army, or in an office.
